Charles Marie Ternes

Charles Marie Ternes (born March 10, 1939 , † June 6, 2004 ) was a Luxembourg archaeologist and ancient historian .

After attending school in Luxembourg, Ternes studied from 1959 at the University of Nancy , the Paris Sorbonne , the École Normale Supérieure and the École des Chartes . In 1963 he received his doctorate in ancient history, Roman archeology and epigraphy. From 1963 to 1999 Ternes taught in secondary schools in Luxembourg. From 1986 he was an associate scientist at the Center Universitaire de Luxembourg and from 1989 to 1999 scientific director of the Department of Classical Studies. In 1996 he completed his habilitation at the University of Metz .

In addition to his work as a teacher, Ternes devoted himself above all to researching the ancient history of Luxembourg and the neighboring regions, especially the Rhineland in Roman times. In 1974 he founded the Société des Antiquités Nationales and the Center Alexandre-Wiltheim.

Ternes was a member of numerous scientific associations and bodies. For his work La vie quotidienne en Rhénanie à l'époque romaine ( La vie quotidienne ) he received the Prix d'Histoire Broquette-Thonin of the Académie Française in 1975 . In 1984 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of François-Rabelais in Tours .
