Roland Schäfer (diplomat)

Roland Schäfer (* 1958 in Laufenburg , Switzerland) is a German diplomat . He has been ambassador to Nepal since October 2017 . Before that, he was Director of the Americas in the European External Action Service from February 2013 .

Roland Schäfer joined the Foreign Service in 1987 after studying Romance languages ​​and history in Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau and Saarbrücken . His first assignments abroad took him to the German Mission to the United Nations, the Embassy in Algiers and the Consulate General in Mumbai.

From 1997 to 2007 he held various positions in the Foreign Office in Berlin, including in the Situation and Crisis Center and as head of the France task force. From 2007 he was Deputy Head of the Embassy in Buenos Aires for three years, then went to the Permanent Representation of Germany to the EU and as Deputy Head to the Embassy in Tel Aviv. In February 2013 he switched to the European External Action Service. As Director for the Americas, he coordinated the EU's commitment to the peace process in Colombia and developed the EU partnership with American states on issues of public security, the rule of law and sustainable development goals .

Roland Schäfer is married and has two grown children.

In the book "Foreign Office: Diplomacy as a Profession" he was one of the authors of the chapter 'Multilateral Relations'.
