Felst received his doctorate in 1965 at the University of Hamburg with an experimental study of nuclear reactions ( stripping reaction on silicon). At DESY, he was significantly involved in the JADE collaboration at DESY's Petra storage ring. The detector was in operation from 1979 to 1986, and there, among other things, gluons were detected in three-jet events and tests of quantum chromodynamics were carried out. Felst was a professor at the University of Hamburg.

In 2000 he received the Max Born Prize .
