Rolf Huebner

Rolf Hübner (born December 3, 1908 in Hamburg , † October 14, 1978 in Bad Hersfeld ) was a German crop scientist . He initially taught at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and from 1952 headed the Institute for Forage Production at the Hessian Teaching and Research Institute for Grassland Management and Forage Production in Eichhof-Bad Hersfeld .

Live and act

Rolf Hübner studied agriculture at the University of Göttingen , where he received his doctorate under the aegis of the crop scientist Otto Tornau in 1935 with the dissertationThe natural conditions of the Göttingen Muschelkalk soils ”. He then worked as an assistant at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding at the Prussian Agricultural Experimental and Research Institute in Landsberg (Warthe) , and from 1938 back at the Institute for Plant Cultivation in Göttingen. In 1941 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . In 1946 he was able to continue his scientific work in Göttingen. In 1948 he completed his habilitation at the mathematics and natural sciences faculty of the University of Göttingen with a paper on chlorophyll content and value properties in forage plants .

As an assistant and private lecturer , Hübner was also responsible for the “ crop cultivation exercises ” to be carried out at the University of Göttingen as part of the diploma course for farmers in the first post-war years . For this central agricultural science course he wrote two textbooks : " Practical course in agricultural seed science " (1947, 2nd edition 1949) and " Practical course in agricultural plant science " (1949). The exemplary didactic books soon became compulsory reading for anyone studying agriculture at a German-speaking university. In 1955, a greatly expanded edition was published by Hübner's seed science under the title “ The Seed in Agriculture ”.

From 1952 until his retirement in 1973, Hübner headed the Institute for Forage Production at the Hessian Teaching and Research Institute for Grassland Management and Forage Production on the Eichhof (Bad Hersfeld) . At the same time he was the deputy director of this institution, which was founded in Wehrda , Hünfeld district in 1947 and had its new location at the Eichhof from 1952. Hübner played a decisive role in the establishment of this teaching and research facility. He made the Eichhof a supraregional training center for agricultural-technical assistants. In 1954 he was awarded the title of adjunct professor . Until 1957 he held a teaching position in the field of forage production at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Göttingen .

In the almost forty years of Hübner's activity in the field of forage crop research, the focus was on questions of physiology, cultivation conditions, yield formation, seed science and the basics of testing. Be highlighted extensive field trials with berseem , Persian clover , silage corn and green oats . He was particularly interested in mixed crops . He tested their suitability for forage production in a nationwide series of tests at different climatic locations. Noteworthy is his summarizing overview of the plant cultivation and production-related requirements of forage cultivation in the book " Feldfutterbau als Hauptfrucht ", which he published in 1964 together with Ulrich Wellmann and Gerta Ziegenbein .

For his services to the development of the Eichhof-Bad Hersfeld teaching and research institute, Hübner was awarded the silver medal of honor in 1978 by the Hessian Minister for Agriculture and Environment.
