Roller burnishing (manufacturing process)

Roller burnishing is a form of surface finishing of rotationally symmetrical workpieces through fine machining , which is related to filing in its mode of action . It improves strength and surface quality . In watchmaking , the tenon roller chair is used for roller burnishing . The method can also be used in bores.

For manual roller burnishing, strip-shaped tools are used, otherwise burnishing disks that rotate faster than the workpiece. They are made of tool steel or hard metal , which is roughened by grinding, or of ceramic . The roughness depth of the tools is 6 to 15 µm, the material removal 10 to 35 µm and the roughness depth achieved 1 to 3.5 µm.
