Rome e. V.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rom e. V. (always spoken with an open o or Rommefau ) based in Cologne is an intercultural association "for the understanding of Roma and non-Roma" with nationwide significance.

history

Today's association came into being in the winter of 1986/87 after larger groups of Yugoslav Roma refugees, a total of almost 1,000 people, came to Cologne, initially as a support initiative. The city administration let the families camp on a wasteland in front of the city. For months she refused to support him, shelter or medical care. Some citizens of Cologne, among them the pastor Renate Graffmann and Kurt Holl , who was later honored as an "alternative honorary citizen" of the city of Cologne , then contacted the families and founded the "Cologne Roma Initiative". In 1988 it became a registered association.

The origins and founding years were determined by “demands and struggles for a permanent right to stay , against racist attacks and for the integration of refugees”.

At this point in time, local politics, with support from part of the population and the Cologne media, aimed to persuade Roma refugees to leave the city as soon as possible. In contradiction to this, there were massive civil rights protests. Members of the Rome e. V. linked the problem of the right to stay with the Nazi persecution of the European Roma in actions of " limited rule violation ". B. symbolically occupied the former Gestapo cells in the so-called EL-DE House or organized a go-in to the Cologne Opera on the occasion of the commemoration of the pogrom in November 1938 . Church authorities joined these protests. In 1990, the city council decided to reverse the policy for a time and initially gave almost 200 refugees the right to stay.

Program and practice

In addition to its endeavors in relation to the law of residence, which also include free advice on immigration law and social issues, the association takes a stand against antigypsy discrimination “in the media, authorities and the population”. He advocates an integration policy that includes the preservation of the identity of the origin and supports and initiates corresponding social and cultural projects. In this sense, based on a resolution by the City Council of Cologne, he maintains the model project Amaro Kher (= "Our House"), a daycare center and a school for Roma refugee children. Since 2004, children and young people between the ages of two and 17 have been looked after and taught in day care centers and all-day schools. Here, the Roma writer Jovan Nikolić from Cologne works as a mediator of Roma culture with his culture caravan . Active and intensive cooperation with parents is part of the concept. Intercultural cooperation takes place through contacts with primary schools in Cologne and neighboring leisure groups.

Amaro Kher was the winner of the nationwide innovation competition “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” for 2011. Amaro Kher offers Roma refugee children “early access to education while preserving their own culture and identity”. This means that the facility is "an outstanding example of pioneering social integration." The competition has been held since 2006 under the patronage of the Federal President and in cooperation with Deutsche Bank.

In addition to social and political work, the Rom e. V. set up an archive and a library on the history and culture of the European Roma, which are among the largest German collections. The Documentation Center of the Rome e. V. was opened in 1999 by Bundestag President Wolfgang Thierse . It advises journalists, students, politicians and associations who are looking for reliable information on the subject.

Cultural and media activities include publications on the history and culture of the Roma. In 2009 the association developed the exhibition “The Forgotten Europeans: Art of the Roma, Roma in Art” in cooperation with the Cologne City Museum, which uses works by non-Roma artists to show the image of Gypsies in European art history since 15th century and at the same time presented contemporary art and poetry by Roma artists for the first time in Germany.

From 1993 to 1996 the Rom e. V. the magazine Jekh Čhib [also: Jek Čip = "one language / tongue"] . Materials on the situation of the Roma and the FRG , which among other things should serve to educate the majority society about antiziganistic stereotypes . It had the self-image of "questioning perceptions, checking supposed knowledge" after there was a social interest in checking this "knowledge" about the minority critically "at best sporadically".

In 2005 the Rom e. V. has been awarded the Bilz Foundation Prize because - as it was said in the speech by the laudator Volker Beck - “he (supports) the improvement of the living conditions of Roma and Sinti , for their right to stay (fights) and their children through various projects (promotes) ”. In the "European Year of Equal Opportunities" 2007, the association received the certificate from the State Minister for Generations, Family and Integration for "the outstanding best practice project 'Amaro Kher-Haus'" in the context of the state competition "Crossing borders. Equal opportunities in Europe - an opportunity for North Rhine-Westphalia ".

Since 2006 the association has published a magazine on the Internet under the title Nevipe (= "Nachrichten"; original title: Roma-Nachrichten ).
