The Roman Lagoon is a lagoon on Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean . It is on the tombolo that connects the Laurens Peninsula with Red Island .
It is named after the Bark Roman from New London , Connecticut , which operated seal hunting in the waters around Heard in the 1860s and 1870s and lost its tender E. R. Sawayer on the coast of the island in September 1866 .
