Romanus (Pope)
Romanus was Pope in 897 . The exact election day is unknown. The enthronement took place in August 897, the end of the pontificate is dated November 897, although it is not clear whether Romanus died - in which case he might have been poisoned - or was deposed, in which case he might have continued to live as a monk .
The election of Romanus, who had previously been cardinal priest of San Pietro in Vincoli , took place against the background of the controversy over the legality of the pontificate of Formosus , which culminated in the synod of corpses in the summer of 897. This of Romanus' predecessor Stephan VI. The show trial that was carried out embittered the followers of Formosus, at whose instigation the enthronement of Romanus was likely to have taken place.
During his brief pontificate, Romanus declared the official acts of his predecessor to be null and void; however, the rehabilitation of Formosus was reserved for his successor, Pope Theodor II .
