history

Possibly it was the original parish church of the original Thaur parish, which looked after all places between Mils and Mühlau . In 1277 an apartment of the pastor in Thaur Castle is mentioned. It was built on the basis of a Romanesque double chapel, apparently the old castle chapel. The southern side wall on the edge of the plateau and the lower church are still preserved.

At the beginning of the 17th century the church was so dilapidated that attending church services became dangerous for the faithful. Archduke Leopold V was successfully asked for financial support. Pastor Georg Meringer and Hall physician Hippolyt Guarinoni then carried out the renovation. The lower church was exposed and an altar was erected in honor of St. Romedius . This saint is said to have been born in Thaur, but there was no evidence of Romedius veneration before the new church was built. In addition, the legend of St. Romedius does not match the historical facts. Pastor Meringer also had a hermitage built; he himself was buried in the church crypt in 1652.

At the end of the 18th century a new church was built and the hermit's house was built west of the church. The Way of the Cross with its romantic stations dates from the years 1872–1875, it was built by the painter Franz Xaver Pernlochner with the help of the Thauerians. The last hermit, Brother Felix Zimmerling (1812–1869), built the hermitage for himself above the old crypt.
