Romsilva ( Regia Națională a Pădurilor Romsilva , German: National Forestry Office Romsilva ) is the state forest administration in Romania based in Bucharest , which is subordinate to the local Ministry for Water and Forests (Ministerul Apelor și Păduril).

Foundation and development

The Romsilva National Forest Service was established in 1991.

The tasks of Romsilva encompass all areas of government action in forestry. It manages the state forests (95% of the Romanian forests) and exercises forest supervision over the non-state forests in the country. Her area of responsibility also includes promoting and advising the newly rebuilt private forest. The management bodies of Romsilva are a Board of Directors and a Chief Executive Officer. The Board of Directors is made up of 15 persons appointed by the Ministry, one of whom is the Chief Executive Officer, who acts as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Below the management level there are 41 forest directorates in Romania, which are responsible for an average of 150,000 hectares of forest, and the 42nd institution is the Institute for Forest Management and Research (Institutul de Cercetari si Amenajari Silvice, ICAS) in Bucharest. The third level in the administrative structure are the forest offices. Their size varies between 10,000 and 25,000 hectares, with sizes in the lowlands being closer to 10,000 hectares and in the mountains closer to 25,000 hectares. Around 40,000 people are employed in forestry.

On June 7th, Dragos Ciprian Pahontu was appointed General Manager for four years. Pahontu has been working for Romsilva in various management positions since 2007.

activities

In 2016, the Romsilva National Forest Agency started an extensive forestation campaign. In the course of this campaign, large areas of forest were regenerated and new ones were reforested. The widest areas that have been afforested are 712 hectares in the east of the country in Tulcea County and Brăila County , with 176 hectares, and in the southwest Romanian Dolj County , where 231 hectares were forested.

Romsilva also has 15 state studs . and is the largest producer of forest fruit products in the country, 90% of which are exported.

The authority publishes the magazine Revista pădurilor (English: Journal of Forests ), which appears every two months .

There are allegations of corruption and illegal logging against Romsilva. Wood is a very popular raw material worldwide. Entire forests have been cut down in Romania, legally and illegally, because you can make good money with wood. Environmental activists blame the country's corruption.
