Romy Schurhammer

Romy Schurhammer (* 1936 in Durlach ; † September 5, 2019 ) was a German journalist and author.

Life

During her apprenticeship, the daughter of a wine merchant worked as a young journalist for the Badische Latest Nachrichten (BNN).

She became known when she traveled alone in a Ford Taunus 12M station wagon through Africa to Cape Town in 1956 at the age of 19 and sent her travel reports to the local newspaper. She wrote her experiences in 1958 in her book “Romy goes to Africa”. 1959 followed a trip in a VW bus to Laos , which she summarized in the book "Guten Tag Pazifik".

She married the renowned photojournalist Hilmar Pabel and with him published numerous reports in magazines such as Stern , Bunte and GEO as well as two large-format photo volumes under the name Romy Pabel . The marriage resulted in two daughters.

Then she spent three years researching the life of her ancestors from Glottertal and the descendants who emigrated. She incorporated the results into the fictional presentation "Die Wildlinge" (2001), which she published again under her maiden name.
