Ron Herron

Ronald "Ron" James Herron (born August 12, 1930 in London ; † October 2, 1994 ) was a British architect and author. In the 1960s he was a member of the Archigram group and head of the “Walking City”.

Life

Herron studied architecture at the Brixton School of Building and Regent Street Polytechnic in London.

He was considered a silent observer and unshakable optimist who believed in the realization of his urban utopias. He always saw the good and the positive in people and situations. His precise power of observation was complemented by his extraordinary talent for drawing. The utopian city models, visionary architectural concepts and experimental living spaces were published in the journal Archigram, with a growing international response. The Archigram group first appeared in public in 1963 with the presentation “ Living City ”, in which they spoke out against formal conventions and thought schemes of architecture in favor of rather loose and free associations. Their activities were prioritized over pop culture and advanced technology. The most important projects were Plug-In City , Walking City , Cushicle and Instant City . "Walking City" (1964) and " Gaket Homes " (1965) are considered to be Herron's most important projects within the Archigram group .

In 1981 he founded the architecture firm "Herron Associates" with his sons Andrew and Simon in London.

From 1965 to 1993 he taught at the Architecture Association in London. In 1994 he became professor and head of the School of Architecture at the University of London .
