biography

Holland started his sailing career at the age of eight. Then he met boat builder in Auckland, where he designed his first ship in 1966, the 26-foot sloop White Rabbit .

He then moved to Florida, where he designed the 24-foot Eygthene boat , which won the 1973 Quarter Ton Cup . (The name is a play on the pronunciation of the word eighteen (eighteen) because these vessels pursuant IOR rules ships 18 feet are considered.) The success of this design won him the order for the Irish businessman Hugh Coveney a Design ship for the one-ton class. The assignment enabled him to go into business for himself. In the following years he successfully designed various boats for sailing regattas. The ships won famous regattas such as the Fastnet Race and were among the leaders in the Admiral's Cup . However, he also had to struggle with setbacks, for example when the drum he had drawn in the Fastnet race in 1985 lost its keel due to a design fault, which almost ended in a catastrophe.

In addition to regatta designs, Holland also developed classic ocean-going cruising yachts.

For some years now, Holland has made a name for itself, particularly with the design of very large yachts. This began in 1986 with the construction of the 103-foot Whirlwind XII . Despite its size, it can be sailed with a small crew. In 2003 Mirabella V was launched, not only the largest ship built by Holland, but also the largest single-masted ship in the world.
