Ronald "Ron" Todd (* 11. March 1927 in Walthamstow , London ; † the 30th April 2005 in Romford, London Borough of Havering ) was a British trade union functionary , among others, between 1985 and 1992 Secretary of the General Transport and workers' union TGWU ( Transport and General Workers Union ) was.

Life

Todd was a worker at Ford , where he began his work as a union official and was most recently chief negotiator for the Ford employees. His original election as general secretary of the TGWU ( Transport and General Workers Union ) , the union with the largest membership in Great Britain at the time, was overshadowed in 1984 by allegations of election fraud and ballot falsification. For this reason, a new election was held in July 1985, in which he was elected to succeed Moss Evans as Secretary General of the TGWU. His tenure became one of the most difficult in the labor movement of the 20th century. Due to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's successful economic policies , the union's membership and influence declined.

Todd then led almost exclusively negotiations with the Labor Party under Neil Kinnock , but these were often not friendly either. In particular because of the Labor plans to reform the legislation for the trade unions, there were conflicts with Kinnock, but also with representatives of other trade unions. The ongoing dispute arose in particular from the Labor Party's intention to selectively reform the so-called union-beating legislation of Thatcher's tenure, while many other union officials called for all legislation to be removed from the agenda. In 1990 he was accused of applying double standards. At the meeting of the umbrella organization TUC ( Trades Union Congress ) , he declared that his union would support the course of the Labor Party, while on the other hand he supported a motion that provided the opposite. Most recently, he was exposed to criticism from a moderate group within his union that wanted to remove him before the end of his regular term of office.

In March 1992, Todd was replaced by Bill Morris as Secretary General of the TGWU.
