The roundabout at Bridgeton Cross is a shelter in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1993 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest monument category A.

history

The roundabout was built in 1874. In the course of the development of the quality of living in the east of Glasgow, it was intended to serve as a weather-protected meeting point for residents. The metal construction was in the Sun Foundry of George Smith & Co produced.

The structure is located at Bridgeton Cross, an intersection where seven roads, including the A74 and A749 , come together. The building called "The Umbrella" by local residents is a well-known urban landmark. The cast iron construction is detailed. Twelve Corinthian columns support the roof so that the roundel can also be seen as a dodecagon . Iron covers are fixed between the columns, creating round-arched openings with ornamented gussets. In addition, a central post supports the tent roof covered with red shingles . On this sits a two-story lantern with clocks on all sides. A metal weather vane sits on the curved hood .
