The Rondo-Galago or Rondo-Zwerggalago ( Paragalago rondoensis , Syn . : Galago rondoensis, Galagoides rondoensis ) is a primate species from the family of the Galagos (Galagonidae). He is the smallest and rarest representative of this group.

features

Rondo-Galagos reach a head body length of 10 to 12 centimeters, the tail is 19 to 22 centimeters significantly longer than the trunk, and the weight is around 60 grams. Their fur is gray-brown on top, the underside is lighter. A white stripe runs between the large eyes, the tail shaped like a bottle brush is characteristic of the species. As with all Galagos, the ears are enlarged and very mobile.

distribution and habitat

Rondo-Galagos only occur in Tanzania . The first specimens were discovered on the Rondo plateau, and seven sites are now known. The habitat of this species are coastal forests and other tropical forests up to 900 meters above sea level.

Way of life

Like all Galagos, these primates are nocturnal. During the day they sleep in self-made leaf nests, at night they go looking for food. They move vertically climbing and jumping and mostly stay in the undergrowth close to the ground. Their diet is made up of insects and fruits.

Danger

The distribution area of this species is split into seven small forest pieces, which are spread across the Tanzanian coast and cover a total of only 92 km². The clearing of the forests and thus the destruction of their habitat represent the main threat. The IUCN lists the species as " critically endangered ".

The species is no longer kept in Europe; the only owner was London in the 1990s.
