Pierick Houdy

Pierick Houdy (born January 18, 1929 in Rennes ) is a French-Canadian composer and music teacher.

Pierick Houdy studied from 1939 at the Paris Conservatory with Marguerite Long , Lazare Lévy , Noël Gallon , Maurice Duruflé , Olivier Messiaen , Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger . In 1953 he won the Prix ​​de Rome , the following year the Grand Prix de la ville de Paris . From 1955 to 1960 he was director of the Tours Conservatory. 1963–64 he taught at the Schola Cantorum , after which he was choirmaster at the Church of St-Séverin until 1969 . He also directed the ORTF children's choir from 1966 to 1969 .

From 1971 he taught composition and music theory at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec in Canada; In 1976 he became a Canadian citizen. His Quebec students included Denis Bédard , Daniel Bolduc , Richard Gagné , Guy Gingras and Alain Leblond .

Among the approximately 150 works by Houdy there are five masses, six cantatas and oratorios, forty chamber music works, film music, orchestral works and works in the electroacoustic music genre . He also composed more than a hundred short choral pieces.

Houdy is married to the harpist Ghislaine de Winter (born May 9, 1934 in Paris). From 1950 she also studied at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Jamet and received first prize in the harp in 1955 . She played for several years in Marie-Claire Jamets Quatuor français and moved to Québec in 1970, where she taught harp at Laval University .
