Pierre Jamet

Pierre Jamet (born April 21, 1893 in Orléans , † June 17, 1991 in Gargilesse-Dampierre ) was a French harpist and music teacher.

Live and act

Pierre Jamet took music lessons from his mother as a child. He first played the piano, then the chromatic harp. From 1906 he attended the class of Marie Tassu-Spencer at the Paris Conservatory . He then switched to the double pedal harp and the teacher Alphonse Hasselmans . In 1912 he received first prize in the subject.

In 1913 he became a member of the Orchester des Théâtre des Champs-Elysées under the direction of the conductor Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht . From 1917 he also worked as a soloist. On March 9, 1917 he played in the world premiere of Claude Debussy's Trio for flute, viola and harp. In 1920 he became a harpist at the Lamoureux Concerts . Two years later he founded an instrumental quintet consisting of harp, string trio and flute, which from 1945 became the quintet Pierre Jamet . Composers such as Jean Françaix and Germaine Tailleferre wrote works for this formation.

From 1936 to 1959 Jamet was also principal harpist at the Paris Opera , from 1936 to 1938 at the Concerts Pasdeloup and then until 1948 at the Concerts Colonne .

From 1948 to 1963 Jamet taught harp at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 1962 he founded the Association Internationale des Harpistes et Amis de la Harpe , and in 1964 the École de Harpe during the summer courses of the Académie de Gargilesse .

In 1968 Jamet founded the annual Festival de Gargilesse and in 1977 the International Harp Competition Concours Marie-Antoinette Cazala , which took place every three years until 1991.
