The Ronn Bréck in the Neudorf district in Esch an der Alzette in Luxembourg was torn down from April 12 to April 16, 2017 ( Easter week ). This involved a (fake) steel - sheet bridge with attached, lower side road route.
The bridge dominated the quarter for almost a century and was also referred to as the “landmark” of the Esch-Neudorf district.
Surname
The name Ronn Bréck was not an official name for the bridge. This was named after the location of the structure as the Neudorf railway bridge (Pont ferroviaire Neudorf).
Ronn denotes the curve, the arch of the bridge. Bréck means bridge in Luxembourg .
history
The bridge was built in 1926 and opened in 1927. It was part of the track connection between the “Terres Rouges” steel works and Schifflingen , but had not been used for many years. Ownership of the bridge was the steel group Arbed and the bridge was one of the last group ArcelorMittal .
The Ronn Bréck was also a symbol of resistance against the National Socialist dictatorship and the occupation of Luxembourg from 1940 to 1944. On the morning of the first national holiday after the occupation of Luxembourg, on January 23, 1941, two workers from Schifflingen had hung the blue, white and red Luxembourg flag on the bridge , in the midst of a sea of swastika flags .
To commemorate the bridge, it is planned to preserve a small part of the bridge and erect it as a memorial.
Planned reuse
The bridge was originally intended to be preserved for pedestrians and cyclists ("Highway" project) and thus "Dieswee" was to be connected to the "Schlassgoart". However, this project was not implemented for cost reasons. The implementation of the project would have required around three million euros for the purchase of the property including the bridge and probably one million euros for the adaptation, because the bridge would have had to be raised. The Ronn Bréck crossed another railway line over Neudorfer Strasse. According to Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL), there would probably have been problems with future generations of trains because of the short distance at height.
