The Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is a nature reserve located 22 kilometers northeast of Pretoria in the South African province of Gauteng .

The Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve was established in 1977 as a nature reserve and outdoor recreation area. It is particularly popular with South Africans and tourists for observing different species of animals, including birds, zebras, kudu, warthogs, impala and waterbuck, for water sports and fishing.

It is set up in a south and north area. There are opportunities for water sports in the northern sector of the protected area. Extensive animal observations are possible in the southern sector and a 7-kilometer hiking trail with a rest stop near the dam is available here. A conference center with an overnight camp and individual cottages complete the tourist offer.

The dam in what is now the reserve, originally referred to as Pienaars Rivier Dam , was built in 1956 to provide water to the surrounding landowners. Nowadays the dam has developed into one of the most important water suppliers for the region around Pretoria.

North of the dam is a named after him was military research center of the SADF . It was dissolved from 1990 onwards. The area is now under the control of the Agricultural Research Council .
