The Roraimanachtschwalbe ( Setopagis whitelyi , Syn. Caprimulgus whitelyi ) is a species of bird from the family of the nightjar (Caprimulgidae). It occurs in northern Brazil , southern Venezuela and Guyana . Their range includes wooded, moist slopes and heights on Tepui (table mountains). The Latin name refers to Henry Whitely .
description
The Roraimanachtschwalbe is 21–22 cm tall, the male weighs between 30 and 40 g, the female between 45 and 48 g. The species looks very similar to the more common black night swallow ( Nyctipolus nigrescens ). The main distinction is the evenly yellow-brown under tail-coverts. Their calling is described as a "[hasty] hearing " with a subsequent drop in pitch. This should all repeat itself for a second or two.
Way of life
The diet probably consists of insects . The breeding season is - in Venezuela - between March and April. The nest is made on the ground.
Hazardous situation
The Roraiman nightjar is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
Etymology and history of research
The first description of the Roraiman nightjar was in 1885 by Osbert Salvin under the scientific name Antrostomus whitelyi . The type specimen was collected by Henry Whitely at the Roraima-Tepui . It was Robert Ridgway who introduced the new genus Setopagis in 1912 . The word “Setopagis” is derived from the Greek words “sēs, sētos σης, σητος ” for “ moth , moth” and “pagis, pagē, pēgnumi παγη, πηγνυμι ” for “trap, stick”. The species name honors its collector.
