Life and memory

Together with others, Stallbaumer worked as a refugee helper for Jews after Austria's annexation to the German Reich . She helped Viennese Jews flee to Italy via East Tyrol . Her husband, the haulier Anton Stallbaumer, was also part of the group. The group was betrayed to the Gestapo in 1942 ; Anton Stallbaumer was arrested first, followed by Rosa Stallbaumer. Stallbaumer and four other members of the group were sentenced to several months in prison on June 26, 1942. The two daughters of Rosa and Anton Stallbaumer were placed in Nazi reform homes. Immediately after his imprisonment, however, Stallbaumer was taken to the Dachau concentration camp and from there to the Auschwitz concentration camp. There she died on November 23, 1942. She was the only one of the group that was not released after long imprisonment or concentration camp sentences. Her husband was released from Dachau concentration camp in December 1943.

Bishop Manfred Scheuer criticized in 2009 that there was no commemoration of Rosa Stallbaumer in Sillian. In Innsbruck , Stallbaumer is one of the resistance fighters who have been commemorated on the Liberation Monument since 2011 .
