Rosario Murillo Zambrana (born June 22, 1951 in Managua ) is a writer and has been Vice President of Nicaragua since January 2017 . She has been a partner since 1978 and the wife of President Daniel Ortega since 2005 .

Sandinista Liberation Front

As early as 1969, Murillo joined the fight against the Somoza dictatorship . After a stay in prison, she traveled abroad in 1977 and met Daniel Ortega in Caracas.

After the successful revolution of 1979, Murillo was responsible for the cultural life and publications of the FSLN . After Ortega suffered a heart attack in 1994 and former revolutionary comrades turned away, Murillo's role became increasingly important for the president who was elected in 2006. She was officially a government spokesperson with the authority of ministerial authority to give instructions to regional authorities. Nobody else was allowed to make official statements. Daniel Ortega himself had publicly stated that he shared power with Murillo. In the 2016 presidential election, Murillo stood as his deputy. The only serious opposition candidate had been exchanged for a puppet in court and parliamentarians protesting against it had been dismissed.

In the words of writer and ex-Sandinista Gioconda Belli , Murillo's propaganda was “more Goebbels than Orwell ” (“This is more Goebbels than Orwell”) when she spoke of peace and reconciliation on July 17, 2018, while the police and Paramilitaries attacked the indigenous community in Monimbó with Kalashnikovs , sniper rifles and artillery.
