Petrović rose garden
The Petrović Rosarium is a rose garden in Vrčin in the Grocka district, created by the Yugoslav rose breeder Radoslav Petrović from 1994 . The Rosarium is located 23 km south of Belgrade at the foot of the Avala Mountain. The Rosarium specializes in the collection of old garden roses .
History and characteristics of the rosarium
The 8500 square meter rosarium is next to the Kis rosarium near Pancevo, which was established in 1968, and is the most internationally renowned rose nursery and rose garden in Serbia . Almost 14,000 rose bushes of 2,600 different rose varieties have been planted in the rosarium, which was laid out as a formal garden . The focus of the collection is on old rose varieties, especially from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The first roses to be planted in the rosarium included 'Louise Odier', 'Ferdinand Pichard Camaieux', 'Baron Girod de L'Ain', 'Climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison ' and 'Bourbon Queen'. In order to secure the financing of the purchases of new rose varieties, Radoslav Petrović started breeding, propagating and selling roses worldwide.
Today, the extensive collection of old roses in the rosarium is supplemented by rare roses and modern varieties, including over 200 English roses , bred by David Austin , and bred by Christopher Warner and Dominique Massad. Today the rosarium is an important reference garden in the Balkans. It is in USDA climate zone 6b (average coldest annual temperature −20.4 ° C to −17.4 ° C).
Since 2007 the Rosarium Petrović has been a member of the World Federation of Roses Societies Breeders'Club , to which 16 other internationally successful rose breeders and rosariums, such as David Austin Roses or Georges Delbard, belong.
The Petrović rose garden is open to visitors when the roses are in bloom. He is also part of the nursery of the internationally renowned rose growing company Petrović.
