Rosebank is a disused whiskey distillery in Camelon , Falkirk , Scotland . The preserved distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish list of monuments.

history

Rosebank 12

The distillery was founded by James Rankine around 1840, although whiskey has been produced on the site since 1798 (by the Stark brothers). Across from Rosebank, on the other side of the Forth-Clyde Canal, was the Camelon Distillery operated by John Stark , which closed in 1861. Even before it closed, James Rankine had leased the malt house from the Camelon Distillery. After the Camelon distillery was closed, his son R. W. Rankie, who in the meantime also ran Rosebank and had it completely renovated in 1864, took over the distillery including the malt house and in 1865 had everything demolished except for the malt house. In 1914 Rosebank was one of the five founding distilleries of the Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) alongside Clydesdale , Glenkinchie , Grange and St. Magdalene . From 1917 to 1919 there was no production. In 1968 the old malt house was closed and demolished. In 1987 the distillery went to United Destillers (UD, today Diageo ), and the distillery has been closed since May 1993. In 2002 the buildings were sold to British Waterways . The remaining distillation equipment was stolen around the turn of 2008-09 during the holidays.

In October 2017, it was reported that the Ian Macleod Distillers company had bought the property and at the same time acquired the trademark rights and the remaining stocks of Rosebank whiskey from the previous owner Diageo. As a result, intensive work was done to reopen the distillery. In January 2019, Ian Macleod Distillers received planning permission from the Falkirk Council. The stills were commissioned as copies of the original equipment in order to preserve the characteristics of the earlier whiskey. The opening is planned for the end of 2020.

production

The water for the distillery, which belongs to the Lowlands region, came from the Carron Valley Reservoir in the Fintry Hills. It had an iron mash tun, a wash, a low wine and a spirit still , and accordingly it was triple distilled.
