St. Magdalene / Linlithgow was a whiskey distillery in Linlithgow , West Lothian , Scotland . The former distillery buildings are categorized in the Scottish monument lists.

history

The distillery was founded in 1765 by Sebastian Henderson under the name Linlithgow and taken over in 1797 by Adam Dawson, who had opened the Bonnytown distillery in Linlithgow in 1795 . In 1810 the two distilleries were merged. In 1912 the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) acquired the distillery. In 1914 it was one of the five founding distilleries of the Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) alongside Rosebank , Clydesdale , Glenkinchie and The Grange . There was no production during the Second World War . In 1983 it was shut down. Parts of the distillery have been demolished, others are now apartments.

production

The water for the distillery, which is part of the Lowlands region, came from Loch Lomond . The malt used was very heavily peated and had come from Glenesk since the company's own malt house was closed in 1968 . It had two wash stills and two spirit stills each , so it was distilled twice.
