The rose garden is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 100 meter long rose garden is located in the north-eastern part of the old town island, in the Jakobi quarter . It begins on Hundestrasse opposite the confluence of the Tünkenhagen , runs south and ends on Dr.-Julius-Leber-Strasse across from bei St. Johannis .

history

The street 1326 is first mentioned in a document with the Low German - Latin mixed name Dwerstrate inter plateam canum et sancti Johannis (cross street between Hundestrasse and St. Johannis), which referred to the St. Johannis monastery located here .

In 1415 the name Ex opposito horti sancti Johannis (opposite the garden of St. Johannis) and 1387 Rose Guard , derived from the garden of the abbess of the monastery on the east side of the street . This name has been kept with slight variations over the centuries (1460 By dem Rosengarde sunte Johannis , 1484 Im Rosengarde , 1536 Rosenstrasse , 1757 Rosengarn ). The current name was officially established in 1852.
