At St. Johannis
At St. Johannis is a street in Lübeck's old town .
location
The approx. 120 meter long street near St. Johannis is located in the east of the old town island. It begins opposite the confluence of the rose garden with Dr.-Julius-Leber-Straße , runs south and ends at the intersection with Fleischhauerstraße ; Schlumacherstraße is its continuation .
history
The street was first mentioned in 1262 with the Latin name Versus sanctum Johannem (After St. Johannis), derived from the St. Johannis monastery , on the front of which the street ran along. 1347 the name is Platea transversalis apud S. Johannem (connecting road near St. Johannis). In 1460 the street was considered part of the rose garden and was accordingly called Rosengharde . The current name was officially established in 1852.
The image of the street underwent considerable changes at the beginning of the 20th century , when the conventual inner houses built on the former monastery grounds from 1805–1806 were demolished during the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and the extension of Johannisstrasse down to the new canal bank and the large monastery property through the passage of the road was divided. On the southern part of the site, bordering on Bei St. Johannis, two large complexes were built between 1903 and 1905, which do not correspond to the historical standards of the development and also fall out of the scope stylistically: The Johanneum high school, built in the neo-Renaissance style as well as the neo-baroque main fire station .
