The Rose Place is located in Osnabrueck district downtown . Although it lies in front of the former city fortifications, it is counted as part of the Osnabrück Neustadt. The federal highway 68 runs across the square , which is to be downgraded to a country road in the future by the construction of the federal highway 33 .

location

Together with the Rosenplatz district, Rosenplatz represents the southernmost part of Osnabrück city center. In the west, Sutthauser Straße is the border with the desert district, the Münster-Osnabrück Hbf and Osnabrück-Bielefeld railway lines form the border with the Schölerberg district . A new train stop is to be set up on the railway line in the future in order to better connect the southern part of the city center and the nearby schools to the rail network. It has not yet been finally clarified whether the station will be called Rosenplatz or Neustadt. From 1906, Rosenplatz was connected to the Osnabrück tram, when the tram went from Hasetor via Nikolaiort, Neumarkt to Johannistor (on Rosenplatz), later it was extended as tram line 2 from Haste via Neumarkt, Johannistor (Rosenplatz) to Schölerberg.

history

In December 1940, construction work began on an underground bunker under the square. The 50.30 meter long bunker had a ceiling thickness of 1.40 meters and should accommodate 245 people. After the end of the war, the bunker was filled with rubble.

The district around Rosenplatz was declared a redevelopment area by a council resolution on March 27, 2001. This made it possible to obtain urban development funds from the state, federal government and the EU, which improved the social situation of the area. In 2005 the competition for the redesign of the square was announced. The winning design of the working group "process yellow" prevailed and was further elaborated in the following time.

For the redesign of the street space, the lighting of the square was switched from mercury vapor to LED lamps, saving 12 t of CO 2 per year. In addition, 400 roses of various kinds and 30 trees were planted around the square. During the construction work on the square, the underground bunker under Rosenplatz was rediscovered. The bunker, which was filled in at the end of the war, was filled with concrete to remove the remaining cavities.

The redesigned Rosenplatz was opened on July 11, 2012 after 16 months of construction. The square got a concrete ceiling in different shades of red and gray which vary depending on the concrete slab. In addition, new tree islands were created, as well as wooden ramps that should invite you to linger. As a result of the renovation, the street width was reduced from four lanes (two in each direction) to two.

After only a few years, the wooden ramps became a problem because they started to rot despite the insurance of the supplier. The city's claims for damages could not be carried out because the supplier became insolvent.

Buildings and art

Rosenhof

The Rosenhof

The Rosenhof was once opened as a cinema on September 29, 1953. After the operating company filed for bankruptcy in 2002, a renovation started in 2004 to create an event location where concerts, parties, performances and readings take place.

Schäferbrunnen

The Schäferbrunnen before the reconstruction of the square

The shepherd's fountain, built by Lukas Memken in 1904, was restored during the renovation work on Rosenplatz in Hörstel- Bevergern and then rebuilt on Rosenplatz. In addition to its name, it is also known under the name Strökerbrunnen and is supposed to remember the Good Shepherd . The figure originally made of copper was melted down for the propagated final victory of the National Socialists in World War II. The fountain was replaced by a sandstone replica from Georg Hörnschemeyer .

Roxy in the box

The Italian artist Roxy in the Box created various interactive works of art by celebrities around Rosenplatz in 2017. Passers-by could take a selfie of themselves and the work of art and send it to the art gallery. Self-painted portraits of Jean-Michel Basquiat , Yoko Ono , Marina Abramović , Albrecht Dürer , Udo Lindenberg , Salvador Dali , Björk and other personalities were distributed around the square and neighboring streets at various locations .
