The Rose Street is a street of Lübeck .

location

The approximately 100 meter long Rosenstrasse is located in the northeastern part of the old town island, the Jakobi Quartier . It begins at the square-like meeting of the Kleiner Gröpelgrube , Wakenitzmauer and Rosenpforte , runs southwards and finally flows into the Große Gröpelgrube .

history

The Rosenstrasse was originally regarded as part of the Große Gröpelgrube, which initially only extended to the point where the two streets meet today. The Große Gröpelgrube was understood as a road that had a sharp bend at this point, but did not end, but continued continuously. It was not until the beginning of the 14th century that the Große Gröpelgrube was extended beyond this bend through the area of the so-called Poggenpohl to the city wall towards the east that today's Rosenstrasse began to be viewed as independent.

In 1330 it was first mentioned in a document with its own name; their mixed Low German - Latin name is Dwerstrate inter fossas lutifigulorum (cross street between the pottery pits, i.e. the large and small pit). 1352 then the name Rosenstrate is documented, probably derived from the gardens that extended here up to the city wall. Rosenstrasse is a common street name in the medieval city centers of cities in northern Germany. It is an indication of prostitution (bath houses, Hurengasse). In essence, this name was retained in the following period:

  • 1360: Platea rosarum (Rosenstrasse)
  • 1375: Rozenstrate
  • 1441: Platea rosae

The current name was officially established in 1852.

The Rosenpforte owes its name either to the street itself or to the gardens located here, a small passage in the city wall leading to the Wakenitzufer at the beginning , which in the 17th century gave the name to a fortified wall that was built there and which is now named after a street is worn in the same place.
