The Great Gröpelgrube

The Große Gröpelgrube is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 230 meter long Groepelgrube is located in the northeastern part of the old town island, the Jakobi Quartier . Starting opposite the northeast corner of the Koberg , it connects the Große Burgstraße with the Wakenitzmauer , halfway through the Rosenstraße and shortly afterwards the Lange Lohberg coming from the south into the Große Gröpelgrube.

history

The name of the Großer Gröpelgrube is not, as is sometimes assumed, derived from the grape , a long-legged kettle that was characteristic of Lübeck kitchens in earlier times. Rather, the origin lies in the word Groper , an old Low German term for potters who settled in this area in the early days of Lübeck because of the existing deposits of yellow clay and who thus gave their names to the Große and Kleine Gröpelgrube . The street names documented in writing prove this derivation from the earliest times:

  • 1262: Fossa figulorum ( Latin , Töpfergasse)
  • 1283: Fossa olificum (Töpfergasse)
  • 1289: Fossa lutifigulorum (Töpfergasse)
  • 1297: Gropegrove superior (Low German-Latin: Obere Töpfergrube)
  • 1307: Gropengrove
  • 1310: Major fossa lutifigulorum (Große Töpfergasse)
  • 1394: Grote Gropergrove (Great Pottery Pit )
  • 1601: Grepelsgrove
  • 1608: Grote Gropelgrove
  • 1614: Grote Gröpergrove

The current name has been officially established since 1852.
