The rosetting is a cell biological process in which erythrocytes around a central circular cell , or a virion are arranged, whereby under the light microscope, one of the impression rosette is formed.

principle

The cells are mixed and viewed under a light microscope. The rosetting of erythrocytes can be done with different cells. Platelets can also rosette around leukocytes .

Applications

Rosetting is used to determine the Rhesus factor in negative mothers with positive children. For this purpose, postpartum blood (up to 72 h after birth) is mixed with Rho (D) immunoglobulin and cDE indicator cells and then examined. Rosettes are formed in the presence of fetal, Rh factor positive erythrocytes. If rosetting has taken place, the amount is then determined using the Kleihauer-Betke test .

Rosetting has also been described in virology and parasitology , e.g. B. in rosetting viruses such as smallpox viruses or parasites such as plasmodia . Rosetting used to be used as a diagnostic method in virology, while other diagnostic methods are used today. Before the development of FACS and MACS , rosetting was used to isolate cell types from blood.
