Roswitha Bachner

Roswitha Bachner (born April 13, 1954 in Scheibbs ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and trade unionist. She was a member of the Austrian Federal Council from 2000 to 2007 and has been Vice President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) since 2007 .

education and profession

Bachner attended elementary school from 1960 to 1964 and then moved to a secondary school from 1964 to 1968. She then graduated from the technical college for economic women's professions from 1968 to 1969 and then learned to be a hairdresser from 1969 to 1972.

After completing her apprenticeship, she worked as a laborer in a lighter factory from 1973 to 1974 and was then a housewife from 1974 to 1975. She then worked in the Schmelz retirement home, where she was chairman of the works council from 1975 to 1992. She subsequently rose to the position of chairwoman of the central works council in the board of trustees of the Viennese retirement homes, where she held this position from 1980 to 1992. From 1992 to 1995 she was Section Secretary of the Homes, Social Services, Domestic Workers' Union in the Hotel, Hospitality, Personal Service (HGPD) and then from 1995 to 2000 she was the central secretary of the HGPD. She then worked from 2000 to 2007 as senior secretary of the ÖGB, before taking over the office of vice-president of the ÖGB in 2007.

Politics and functions

From 1987 to 1995, Bachner was deputy chairwoman of the hotel, restaurant, and personal service union, and in 1995 was promoted to the board of the Vienna Chamber of Labor and Employees. She has also been a member of the board of the Federal Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees (Bundesarbeitskammer) since 2000 and represented the SPÖ in the Austrian Federal Council from October 20, 2000 to March 29, 2007. From 2004 to 2007 she also acted as deputy chairwoman of the Social Democratic parliamentary group. From 2003 to 2005 and from 2006 to 2007 she was Chair of the Committee on Social Security, Generations and Consumer Protection and also served as Deputy Chair of the EU Committee. In addition, from 2003 to 2004 she was deputy chairman of the health committee. She has been a councilor for the SPÖ in her adopted home Waidmannsfeld since 2015.
