Rotbald II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rotbald II. († probably 1008 ), also Rothbold , Rotbold , Rodbald , Roubaud , or Rotbaud , was Count of Provence from 968 and Margrave of Provence from 993 . He was the elder of two sons of Boso II , Count of Arles and Avignon , and Constanze of Provence. The younger brother, Count Wilhelm I , had already had the title Marchio since 979 and is later even referred to as Dux . Rotbald and Wilhelm presumably ruled the country together and without division. With Wilhelm's death Rotbold II became the head of the family, so that the title Marchio was due to him.

It first appeared in March 965 when he was signing a document from his father. In April 970 he signed a donation from his brother to Saint-Victor in Marseille , and on August 28, 990 another for Cluny Abbey . In 1005, together with his sister-in-law Adelheid von Anjou and her son, his nephew Wilhelm II , he granted Saint-Victor additional privileges.

He married Emilde, possibly a daughter of Count Stephan von Gévaudan . He left behind his son Rotbald III. , who succeeded him, his daughter Eimildis, who embarked on a spiritual career, and probably another daughter, Tetberga, who married Count Armengol I. von Urgell .
