The Red Cross Medal was donated on August 10, 1907 by Grand Duke Friedrich August II of Oldenburg for "men and women who have made special merits in voluntary nursing (in times of war or peace) or in other activities of charitable endeavors. "

With a ruling of June 9, 1908, the scope of the award was extended to persons who "have made special merits in the management of health and other non-profit institutions or who have promoted such purposes as members of associations or public corporations in an outstanding manner."

Appearance and wearing style

The original version of the medal was a bronze-gold-plated oval medallion with a soldered-on shield showing the Red Cross on a white background. In the middle the interwoven initials of the founder. The first production series of 50 pieces was made by the court goldsmith Bernhard Knauer from Oldenburg. The following specimens were - probably due to material problems (from 1916 bronze was no longer allowed to be used due to the war) - silver-gold-plated (950 silver).

The award was carried on a dark blue ribbon with two vermilion side stripes, each 2.5 mm wide. Women wore the crowned and gold-plated lettering "E" of the Grand Duchess Elisabeth von Oldenburg on the ribbon shaped into a bow .

The information from Beyreiß that only a total of 18 awards were occupied by October 22, 1918 must be viewed with caution. Recent studies show that around 450 awards could have taken place.

According to the Jever Castle Museum , this medal was only awarded twice to men.

In addition to this award, the Oldenburg Cross of Merit for sacrifice and loyalty to duty in times of war also bore the Red Cross symbol.
