Architecture and history
The area has been used for the handling and storage of goods since the 14th century. It was located in front of the walls of the Riga city fortification until it was abandoned between 1857 and 1863. Up to this point in time, only wooden houses were allowed in advance of the fortifications. Between 1864 and 1886, various architects, such as Robert August Pflug , K. Felsko, Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis and R. Schmaeling, built a total of 58 red and yellow brick storehouses, 13 of which are still preserved today. They replaced wooden buildings that had been in operation there since 1812. There were guidelines for the design of the houses. This resulted in mostly two or three-story buildings made of red brick in the style of eclecticism . The cellars are covered with vaults. The facades are structured rhythmically with pilasters , there are strongly emphasized cornices . The horizontal lines are made of yellow bricks.
Already in the period from 1903 to 1907, the storage facilities lost their importance with the construction of the city's new freight station and other railway facilities. In an attack by Pawel Mikhailovich Bermondt-Awaloff on Riga during the Russian Civil War in 1919, the Red Warehouses were destroyed. Some of the warehouses were then demolished for the construction of the Riga Central Market, while others were converted into residential buildings or also demolished. Some of the buildings retained their function as warehouses.
During the Second World War , the area was part of the Riga Ghetto .
After the area was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, a land use plan was drawn up with the significant support of the Latvian Minister of Culture Helēna Demakova , which primarily provides for cultural uses. Extensive work on the design of the public spaces also followed. In 2009 the art museum kim? in the building complex. With the Dirty Deal Teatro there is also a theater in the district. The Sinfonietta Riga and the Klangwald are also located here. The night market is also held in Ambarenstrasse .
The building complex Moskauer Strasse 4 , 6, 10, 12, 14 , which was built between 1879 and 1881, has been registered in the Latvian Monument Register under number 8714 since January 4, 2010 . The houses Ambarenstrasse 1 , 3, 8, 9 and 10 are also individual monuments .
