The Red House is a listed building in the Upper Swabian town of Memmingen . The building formerly used as a town house for the Rot an der Rot monastery is now privately owned.

The house is located in the old town of Memmingen in the so-called Wegbach settlement on the Stadtbach . The Rotergasse as a connecting road from Lindauer Straße to Oberen Bachgasse is named after the house.

history

The house was built in the late Middle Ages. It was renovated in 1606 by the Rot an der Rot monastery , which owned the house. It was used as a refuge in times of war and as a trading post in the former free imperial city. The house has been privately owned since secularization .

Building description

The three-storey gable roof building is painted in red. A wall about two meters high separates the forecourt from Oberen Bachgasse. The second storey protrudes over an arched arch. In the southeast corner of the ground floor is the secluded former chapel of the house. Inside, straps, ridges and rosettes are stuccoed on the shallow barrel.
