The Red Tower is part of the old city ​​wall of Jena .

Around 1300 the city fortifications of Jena had developed so far that one could speak of a closed system. It consisted of ditches, walls, kennel areas , three gate towers , four corner bastions and twelve shell towers that were added later. The Red Tower, a shell tower on the southeast corner of the city wall, was converted into an open gun bastion with loopholes and gun chambers around 1430 as part of extensive construction work on the fortifications . Archaeological excavations in 1995 revealed finds from the suburban settlement period in the 11th / 12th centuries. Today only the base remains in its former state. In 1870 the natural stone base was covered with red exposed brickwork . A four-story masonry building was built for residential purposes with wooden beam ceilings and inner half-timbered walls . On August 7, 1995, the tower structure collapsed during renovation work due to the failure of the outer masonry. In this accident, four construction workers were killed and four others were injured.

In the years 1999–2000, the tower was rebuilt in its historic appearance with an order volume of 1.3 million euros.

For a while, the Red Tower housed the exhibition rooms of the Jena Art Association .

Today there is a law firm in the premises.
