The Red Cross stands roughly in the middle between Darmstadt and Roßdorf in the Waldgewann "Der Kohlberg" in the Darmstadt Ostwald. It is located between “Aschaffenburger Straße” and “Hanauer Straße” / Bundesstraße 26 . The Red Cross is an approx. 1.40 m high cross made of red Odenwald red sandstone . Immediately south of the cross are three simple benches, also made of red sandstone.

Legend

According to legend, a white wooden cross was supposed to have stood here a few hundred years ago. Christian processions and pilgrimages passed the cross. The believers rested and prayed in this place.

One day one of the pilgrims is said to have been attacked by highwaymen. Seriously injured, the stranger dragged himself to the white wooden cross where he died. The next day his body was found, still dying, clutching the cross and leaving it covered in blood.

Afterwards they tried several times to remove the blood stains and whitewash them over. But they kept coming to light - like a memorial. After all, there was no other way to help and painted the formerly white cross with blood red paint.

Around the middle of the 19th century, the wooden cross was replaced by the current red sandstone cross.
