The Glass Bloodfin Tetra ( Prionobrama filigera ), and red-tailed Glassalmler and shortly Glassalmler called, is a freshwater fish , which in the Amazon Basin appears widespread and there is relatively common. The generic name Prionobrama is made up of the Greek prionae "saw" and the French brème " bream " ( Abramis brama ) and is translated as sawbranch . The species epithet filigera was given because of the first two elongated rays of the anal fin ( Latin filum "thread", and gerus "carrier").
features
The red-fin glass tetra becomes 6 cm long and has an elongated, laterally strongly flattened body. The mouth is on top. The fish are almost completely transparent. The last section of the caudal peduncle and the caudal fin base are blood red. The first ray of the anal fin is white or cream-colored. All other fins and fin parts are transparent. Females are bigger and stronger. With them the first anal fin rays are more elongated. In the male, the white anal fin rays are sometimes followed by a black line.
- Fin formula : dorsal 2/8, anal 3/32/1, pectoral 1/12, ventral 1/7.
- Scale formula : mLR 39 + 4, QR 12, SL 10.
Reproduction
Like most tetra, the redfin glass tetra is free -spawning , which usually spawns in the morning hours just below the surface of the water between dense vegetation. Approximately 200 to 350 eggs with a diameter of 1 mm are released in one act of spawning. The larvae hatch after 14 to 15 hours, depending on the water temperature, and swim free after about three days. The fry become sexually mature when they are six months old.
