The Aphyocharacinae are a subfamily of the true tetras (Characidae). The subfamily is widespread in northern and central South America.

features

The monophyly of the Aphyocharacinae is justified by nine synapomorphies that affect the morphology of the skull bones. This includes that the palatine is longer than half of the ectopterygoid (not with Aphyocharacidium ) and that the nasal septum of the mesethmoid (a skull bone) is formed as two parallel lamellae. The fish are about three to seven cm long.

Genera and species

Seven genera and about 20 species are currently placed in the subfamily.
