Aphyocharax is a genus of the real tetras (Characidae), which differs from all other tetras by a particularly strongly developed first postorbital, a skull bone at the rear edge of the eye socket. Aphyocharax is therefore placed in its own monotypical subfamily. The slender fish are 2.7 to 8 inches long and have a slender, elongated body. In the jaws they have a number of mostly three-pointed teeth.

The fish live in South America from Venezuela to Paraguay in the middle and upper water layers of their home waters. They are free-spawners who release their gametes near the surface of the water.

Some members of the genus are popular freshwater ornamental fish .
