The Red-necked Silphe ( Oiceoptoma thoracicum ) is a kind from the family of carrion beetles (Silphidae).
features
Red-necked silpha are 11 to 16 millimeters long and have a flat and oval body. The wings are black, the pronotum, however, is strikingly orange to red and covered with fine, golden hair. The red pronotum makes them unmistakable. A couple of protruding longitudinal ribs can be seen on the wings, the edge is slightly curved upwards. The feelers are thickened like a piston at the end.
Occurrence
The beetles are widespread in the Palearctic , including in the far north. They are often found on faeces or carrion, and very often also on ripe stinkhorn .
Way of life
The red-necked silphe feeds mainly on excrement, carrion and rotting plants. Stinkhorns benefit from the beetles because they spread their spores. The larvae lead a similar way of life as the adult beetles. They can be found at the same time as the adult beetles.
