The Rothesay Bay is a bay on the east coast of the Scottish island of Bute . The bay is on the Kyles of Bute Strait , which separates Bute from the Cowal Peninsula on mainland Scotland. Ardbeg Point delimits Rothesay Bay in the north from the neighboring bay of Kames Bay . In the south it ends at Cape Bogany Point , which also marks the eastern end of the Kyles of Bute. Along the bay are the village of Ardbeg in the north and Rothesay , which stretches from the head of the bay to beyond Bogany Point. The approximately 2100 m wide Rothesay Bay cuts a maximum of 1700 m into the island.

In the Middle Ages, Rothesay Bay was the site of Rothesay Castle , built in the 13th century , which was the nucleus of Rothesay. The place of execution was on the bank. The gallows was last used in 1673 when a supposed witch was executed. In the 18th and 19th centuries, various jetties were built along the bay. The shoreline of Rothesay Bay developed in the Victorian era when the island was exposed to an increasing flow of tourists, which triggered the construction of hotels and housing. The Tor House, now a listed building, was one of these . Due to the sea panorama on the rising flanks of the bay, one of the main expansion areas was located there. Towards the end of the 18th century, when an imminent attack by the French army was suspected, cannon positions were built at Bogany Point to repel enemy ships.
