The Ringed ( Callonetta leucophrys ) is a species of bird from the family of ducks (Anatidae). It belongs to the genus Callonetta of the swimming ducks (Anatini).

It is occasionally observed in Central Europe. However, these are always captive refugees . In 1998 there was a breeding pair in North Rhine-Westphalia that raised six young birds, none of which fledged. In 1999, a pair with a young bird was observed in the Geneva region.

Appearance

The males are without individual color variations. In the females, on the other hand, the light facial markings are slightly variable.

The moult of the red-shouldered ducks begins when the swinging spring is released. This is followed by the change of the small plumage and the control feathers. The moulting begins at the end of the breeding period.

The chicks have a dark gray headstock. The rear neckline, an eye stripe and the entire top are also dark gray. The face and the underside of the body are silver-white. There are also two silver-white spots on each of the back. The beak and feet are black.

Habitat and existence

The red shoulder duck lives in swamps and lakes of the wooded savannah landscapes of South America. It prefers the nutrient-rich floodplains of the rivers, but avoids the waters of the rainforests and rivers with steep banks. The IUCN puts the total population of the red-shouldered duck at 10,000 to 100,000 animals, with the occurrence being limited to relatively small areas, in which, however, gatherings of 1,000 animals are not uncommon. The species is considered harmless.

Systematics

The species is monotypical . According to the mtDNA sequences, it should belong to the tribe Mergini . Despite her completely different way of life, she is a relative of the sawducks and sea ducks .
