The red-tipped mistletoe ( Dicaeum hirundinaceum ) is an Australian songbird .
features
The male is blue-black on top and gray-white on the underside. The throat, chest and under tail-coverts are scarlet. The female is gray-brown on the upper side, gray-white underneath with pale red under-tail-coverts.
Occurrence
The Rotsteiß mistletoe lives in the rainforest, in sparse forests, hedges and thickets in Australia and parts of Indonesia .
behavior
The bird looks for insects, nectar and fruits, especially mistletoe berries, in bushes and trees. After just 30 minutes, the birds excrete the sticky seeds of these fruits undamaged. The Rotstiss mistletoe roams around in small groups, sometimes covering long distances.
Reproduction
Between October and March, the female builds a large, dome-shaped nest on her own from plant material and cobwebs, which it weaves around the branches of a tree. The clutch, made up of three to four eggs, is only incubated by the female. In contrast, both parents feed the young birds.
