The Rotunda of the Blessed Virgin Mary , also dedicated to Saints Felix and Adauctus since the 14th century , is located on Wawel Hill in Krakow .
history
The church was probably built around 970, which was determined using the radiocarbon method, i.e. during the late tribal period of the Wislanes , in the time of the Christianization of Poland (966), but then possibly under Bohemian rule in Lesser Poland . It is considered to be the oldest sacred building on Wawel Hill. It was designed as a tetrakonchos , a clover leaf - a round building with four apses - and probably served as a palace chapel. It was built from flat sandstone slabs with lime mortar. Two window openings with walls have been preserved as well as traces of a gallery and two other extensions.
Other buildings at the time, perhaps a royal palace, were demolished in the 13th century . From the documents that have been received, it can be concluded that the rotunda was additionally fortified in 1241 on the orders of Prince Konrad of Mazovia .
In 1340 King Casimir III. the great one designated the building as a castle chapel for St. Felix and Adauctus. In the middle of the 14th century the chapel was renovated. In the 17th century the lower part of the chapel was used as a silver treasure chamber, the upper part served as living space. At the beginning of the 19th century the building was partially demolished.
The forgotten building was only rediscovered and partially restored by Professor Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz between 1914 and 1917 . Today it has been part of the Sunken Wawel exhibition since 1975.
