The Red Vanga ( Schetba rufa ) is a passerine bird in the family of the Vangawurger (Vangidae).

features

The red vanga is a 20 cm tall and 30–44 g heavy vanga strangler with a strong, broad beak. The back and top of the tail are red, the underside white, the legs light gray. In the male, the head, throat including the neck and chest are slightly bluish shimmering black, in the female only the top of the head, the neck with a broad gray band, the throat is white.

Red vangas usually appear individually or in family groups, searching extensively in the undergrowth or on the ground for large insects , beetles, worms and small vertebrates.

distribution and habitat

The red vanga belongs to the monotypical genus Schetba and is endemic to Madagascar . It can be found in the tropical and subtropical dry forest and lowland forest up to about 800 m.

The following subspecies can be distinguished:

  • S. r. occidentalis Delacour , 1931 in the west of the country with a slightly longer beak.
  • S. r. rufa ( Linnaeus , 1766), nominate form in north and east Madagascar.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
