Roy James Holt

Roy James Holt (born January 22, 1947 in Borger (Texas) ) is an American experimental nuclear physicist .

Holt studied at Southern Methodist University with a bachelor's degree in 1969 and at Yale University with a master's degree in 1972 and a doctorate in physics in 1972. He then conducted research at Yale and from 1984 at the Argonne National Laboratory . From 1994 to 2000 he was a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he was then adjunct professor. From 2000 he was back at the Argonne Lab as head of the physics department for medium energies.

He deals with nuclear physics at medium energies, photonuclear reactions and electron scattering on nuclei and has been involved in nuclear physics experiments, among other things, on the structure of the deuteron at the Argonne Laboratory, at the LAMPF of the Los Alamos National Laboratory , at MIT, at the SLAC and at the Budker Institute for Nuclear Physics ( BINP) in Novosibirsk as well as in the Jefferson Lab (CEBAF), DESY (Hermes Experiment) and the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility (IUCF).

In the 2000s he was looking for a non-vanishing permanent electrical dipole moment (EDM) in radium 225. Such an EDM in atoms or, for example, in the neutron would be an indication of time reversal symmetry violation (T violation) and thus of new physics . A possible T violation in the pion-nucleon interaction could induce an EDM in the electron shell of the atom via so-called Schiff moments . In the case of radium 225, the effect would be increased due to the collective octupole deformation of the nucleus and the atom would be more sensitive for observing an EDM than the previously used mercury 199.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Jefferson Lab.

In 2005 he received the Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics for his pioneering role in the experimental investigation of the structure of the deuteron and in particular for his innovative use of polarization techniques in these experiments . Since the deuteron is the simplest nucleus, consisting only of protons and neutrons, it is particularly suitable for studying nuclear forces and effects such as meson exchange currents and degrees of freedom in the nucleus.

He served on the editorial boards of Physical Review C, Journal of Physics G, and Nuclear Physics A. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics .

He has been married since 1966 and has three children.
