Profile in the BoxRec database |
Roy "Tiger" Williams (born April 9, 1945 in the USA ) is a former American heavyweight boxer.
amateur
Williams won the Golden Gloves Tournament and the Middle Atlantic Title as an amateur .
professional
Williams was considered to be extremely powerful in the scene, which is why the heavyweight elite were reluctant to take on him. On October 10, 1966, he made his professional debut in Pennsylvania against his compatriot Jimmy Hayes.
In 1969 he beat Bob Stallings in an 8-round fight on points. He was not built up very carefully, which is why he had to accept defeats on points. With a win over Roger Russell in 1972 he won the USA Pennsylvania State Heavyweight Title . At the end of April 1976 he met by far his strongest opponent, Larry Holmes . The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds. Holmes could win this fight. The 1.96 meter tall and robust Williams was also the first world class man that Holmes was able to beat in the pros. Eight months later, he boxed against Earnie Shavers . It was a fight between two heavyweights, each with huge punching power, which Shavers won in the 10th and final round by classic knockout. It was the only fight Williams lost by knockout. He fought his last fight on March 23, 1979
